supra+natura, Saturday 7 to 10pm

supra + natura presents six mini-installations that directly explore or allude to the supernatural in the most open sense of the term. Curator, Rebecca Hanna, wanted to open the conversation to include the idea that the supernatural may be 'part of a larger nature'.

According to this view, held by process theorists, "supernatural" is not merely attributed to magic or religious experience, nor does it imply that a mystery is infinitely unsolvable. Instead, the term is applied to parts of nature that modern science and philosophy do not yet properly understand. The artists were asked to consider what is supernatural in their lives and how they reconcile the parts of human experience that are unexplainable and mysterious.

Trashwater Tee Breakout happening tomorrow

Trashwater has partnered with Fallen Arrows and several of Atlanta's finest artists including Joe Tsambiras, Ash Lethal, Travis Smith, Catlanta and many more to create a new line of tees. We're proud to host the launch event to help them raise money for future clean water initiatives.

The amazing Book Club and The Viking Progress will be performing live and Good Food Truck will be serving up Poodles and other delicious treats. One of their sponsors Pabst will be making sure we don't run out of PBR's. So, come out, see their new shirts, meet the artists, enjoy some fabulous music, food, and $2 PBR's and support Trashwater's efforts to provide innovative clean water solutions in developing nations.

Their tees are printed on American Apparel shirts and will be available for purchase online at trashwater.org after the event. All proceeds go to their work in Nicaragua and Egypt.

This will also be the last weekend to check out "Informaladies" by Emily Maxwell. We hope to see you there!

We're thrilled to be presenting Emily in a solo exhibit at MINT. Her support of and participation in past MINT events has been invaluable and we're honored to work with her again.

From the artist:

"As a body of work, Informaladies is, by-and-large, me-centric, addressing the specific comforts, fears, pleasures and questions I derive from everyday life. Weaving together bland observations, aspects of popular culture, family lore, and matters of personal health, Informaladies functions as a formerly private personal lexicon now laid bare. One may assume that by sharing my specific narrative I presume it to be exceptional. This is not the case. Rather, in exploring my own ordinariness and putting my concerns under the microscope, I hope to initiate a more general discussion about self-scrutiny and why we love what we love. While my interests and obsessions are my own, the need for them and the pleasure derived from them is perhaps something more universal. I don't claim to be the first person to have loved a song, to have wrestled with vice, or to have had an alarming dream. Instead, I seek to address these common themes in my own way, embrace the clichés inherent to them, and personally invite the viewer to do the same."

The exhibit will run through Sunday, September 11th.

Fundraiser at WonderRoot - Saturday, July 30th

MINT has been a totally volunteer run organization for over 5 years. We've worked with more than 200 artists, hosted upwards of 60 exhibits and partnered with numerous organizations such as BurnAway, Flux Projects, and Young Blood Gallery and Boutique, and we've recently launched a mentorship program that will allow 3 emerging artists to develop their creative voices.

We've been lucky to garner immense support from so many members of the community but sometimes we need to raise just a little more cash.

So, we're busy gearing up for our annual fundraiser at the WonderRoot Community Art Center. As always, we've got art for sale via silent auction for the month of July. Then, on July 30th, we'll host musical performances from Shepherds, The N.E.C. and The Clap in addition to a photobooth.

All proceeds go towards organizational and programming expenses. We hope to see you there!

Art Through Resistance tonight!

Art Through Resistance is a group show curated and hosted by MINT and Georgia Students for Public Higher Education (GSPHE). Through this show, we hope to highlight the devastating effect of budget cuts on students, workers, immigrants, and artists that are sweeping our city, state and nation. It seems as though whenever there is economic turmoil, those that ...can afford it the least end up bearing the burden. But across the world, people are fighting back. Here in Atlanta there has been a constant struggle against the budget cuts, from students fighting against the direct attack on public education to artists resisting the defunding of arts program in our city.

Horrible Adorable opens tomorrow

Horrible Adorable, a joint exhibit from local artists Olive lynch and Travis Knowles, shows two approaches to dealing with the gap between truth and perception. Lynch, through a series of framed prints and installations, shows her views on the 'tumourous failure' of art to communicate intention: "Definitions and concepts compound upon themselves until they are so complex that they lose relevance to the audience-but still retain traces of the idea. I can only trace the outlines. But there is something mystical in the impenetrable: like darling, malformed, monstrous children."

Knowles uses contrastingly dark, and vibrantly colorful paintings, as well as large wooden sculptures to show these gaps through the lens of the supernatural. "Whether through ancient creation myth or modern day superstitions, humanity is constantly trying to explain gaps in knowledge and understanding with fantastical creatures and grandiose situations. I try to access the same humanity that caused our ancestors to name constellations after gods and create rituals in fear of angering local animal spirits. I assign Spirits to humerus bones and make colorful Mystic priests out of newborn babies."

Lynch, an Atlanta transplant, graduated from Georgia State in 2011 with a B.F.A in printmaking and currently works as a graphic artist. She uses a variety of mediums for this exhibit, but focuses on printmaking and painting. She has most recently exhibited in the Georgia State "Spring BFA Exhibition." Knowles studied at the Atlanta College of Art and graduated in 2006 with a degree in Painting. He currently freelances as a painter and artist and is active in the Atlanta music scene. More info can be found on his website (traviseldon.blogspot.com)

Noelle is interested in how and where experience is held in the body. This interest provides a framework for extracting the corporeal language that both intimately connects and individuates us. Noelle has been working in the field of dance for over 15 years as a performer, choreographer, administrator and teacher. She has a BFA and MFA in dance. Her work has been supported by Caldera's Artist Residency program, the Regional Arts and Culture Council, the Schlesinger Fellowship, a Wexner Center for the Arts Assistantship and most recently she was selected by PICA and the NDP to travel to the Dublin Dance Festival as part of their pilot international exchange program. She has taught at The Ohio State University, the Governor’s School of North Carolina and co-founded the dance class series Heavy Rotation with Kathleen Keogh of Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner. "Doomsday" is tonight!

Doomsday will let us enter the minds of artists Allen Taylor and Josh Feigert. Both, connected by their love of music, will present a visual interpretation of chaotic harmony.

In his own words Josh introduces himself as "punk rock moonshine. schizophrenic dude drawing maps of every face in the world overlapping. trainyards. William S. Burroughs basement. haunted by capitalism imposed paranoia. just to feel real for a while. He does it for the kids, his kid. He draws because he can."

Allen explains to us that the drawings in Doomsday are his reactions to the inevitable creeping void into nothingness. They are the love letters to the apocalypse, cave paintings from the rapture, his view of a personal utopia, an ideal way to spend his life, and greet the end of the world.

The exhibit will run through July 3.

Leap Year applications are up!

Leap Year, facilitated by MINT, is a year long, emerging artist mentorship program that utilizes the established talent and organic connectivity of the Atlanta artistic community. Three selected artists will have the opportunity to participate in a program of development with resources culled from numerous organizations and individuals active in Georgia. Leap Year's goals are to provide space and support for emerging artists to be more thoughtful about their work and creative careers, to foster partnerships and community between various arts organizations, to create a more sustainable arts economy, and to nurture a generous artistic spirit within Atlanta.

MINT developed this collaborative effort as an extension of their mission to offer exhibition space, curatorial opportunities and other resources to artists. Leap Year will not only provide three emerging artists with timely monetary and interpersonal support, it will also help them understand how to move forward as creative individuals. Participants will be paired with two different mentors, receive free memberships to many arts related organizations in the Atlanta area, and will be able to participate in a series of workshops and discussion groups specifically tailored to their medium, background and needs. They will also receive a small stipend to be used for supplies, free studio space and opportunities for community service and public art installations. At the end of the program, the three artists will have a group exhibition to showcase their new body of work.

Preference will be given to applicants who:
1. Are not currently enrolled in a college or university
2. Have minimal solo exhibition experience
3. Have demonstrated a commitment to Atlanta's art community and can list examples
4. Are willing to remain in Georgia for the duration of Leap Year
5. Ability to commit to 2 to 5 hours per week to Leap Year programming
6. Have minimal published arts criticism
7. Have received minimal grant/private funding

"Leaving Dakota" this Saturday, May 21st from 2 to 6pm

Indie Photographer and author of Armed America, Kyle Cassidy (www.kylecassidy.com) is re-inventing the art show with his newest masterpiece, Leaving Dakota, a collection of 4 x 6 photos packed up and sent round the world on a tour unlike any other. Leaving Dakota tells the story of young woman sucked into a mysterious world of occult and murder, but there is a catch: Kyle has left the photos un-numbered, thus leaving the linear... stream of the story up to the audience. Change the order you view it and you change the story. Will the heroine escape or does she remain trapped in her world of gray skies and mystery?

Beginning in San Diego in Dec 2010 folks across the country have hosted Cassidy’s work in any way that they could dream from traditional gallery settings,to bars, office spaces,and even one person’s garage. Now it is Atlanta’s turn to host this truly unique experience before Leaving Dakota travels across the pond to stops in Europe and beyond.

Bang! Arts Promotions and Management’s intern extraordinaire, Lena Kotler will take on the Atlanta stop of Leaving Dakota’s worldwide tour at MINT Gallery in conjunction with their Exquisite Corpse exhibition for a surrealist tea party extravaganza. To help with this endeavor we’ve invted special guests Cafe Campesino and their wonderful organic creations, along with the stunning body art of Stephanie Anderson (Neon Body Armor) who will paint living statues live during the event, all to to the music of, George Wallace from local Atlanta favorite “A Fight To The Death” with special guest Ben Holst!

For one brief day, audiences will be invited into a world where linear story-telling is left behind and life becomes a “Choose-Your-Own-Adventure” fantasy.

"Exquisite" opens on Friday, May 13th

In this group exhibit, loosely based on the surrealist “exquisite corpse” technique, seven local artists will contribute elements to be composed into collaborative figurative arrangements. Curated by MINT's Gallery Manager, Mike Germon, “Exquisite” will allow each participating artist to explore physicality and the living form using diverse mediums from video to embroidery. So This One Time...

...a show about awkward situations.

Over the last several months, Katie Coleman and Jane Garver have been collaborating with each other and many other people trying to collect the best stories about “bad” situations. All of the work in their show started with a true conversation or event, because true yet unbelievable stories are the most memorable.

The stories they tell range from the mundane to the ridiculous, often utilizing image and text to blur the lines between storytelling and visual art.

They will turn MINT into a staged home interior to house their strange cast of characters, and to give old stories a new context. To be clear, they are decidedly pro-awkward, highlighting how funny little memories or strange moments can be re-used to make a new shared experience.

Spirit Animals opens on March 12th

A "spirit" or "power animal" is a representation of a creature that represents one's connection to the world, life, the individual's personality traits, or power.

In the shamanic worldview, everyone has power animals or tutelary spirits which empower and protect them from harm, like guardian spirits or angels in the Abrahamic Traditions.

We asked artists throughout Atlanta to submit work inspired by their spirit animal. The exhibit will feature pieces from over 50 artists who work in a variety of mediums.

The night will also include a special vision quest led by The Back Pockets at 10pm.

MINT is organizing its first ever BINGO Fundraiser! We invite you to make up to five bingo cards for the event. There are no stipulations for what they look like, except that the cards can be no smaller than 4x6 inches and no larger than 8x10 inches. Feel free to have the playable bingo portion of your card(s) on one side, and your artwork on the other. Of course, submitted cards must be playable and they must follow standard bingo guidelines. You know what we’re talking about: there must be five columns and five rows with “B-I-N-G-O” at the top of the card(s) and the correct, corresponding numbers in each space of each column.

Column B contains numbers 1 - 15
Column I contains numbers 16 - 30
Column N contains numbers 31 - 45
Column G contains numbers 46 - 60
Column O contains numbers 61 - 75

And, of course, don’t forget the “free” space in the center of the card, or the third row in column “N.”

Here’s the Skinny: The fundraiser will take place between 3 pm and 6 pm on Saturday, March 26, 2011. We will have tables set up inside & possibly outside (depending on the weather) for bingo, light snacks and beverages available at the bar, and a DJ spinning records in the back.

We will be selling cards at the door for $5 a piece starting at 3 pm until we are sold out. To be fair, all cards will be sold at random, so no choosing. Prizes will be provided by local businesses and given to the winners of each bingo round---picture frame, “X,” blackout, you name it.

For donating one to three cards, we’ll give you one free drink at the bar, but, for donating four to five cards, we’ll give you one free drink PLUS a free bingo card to play with or just to take home---though you really don’t want to miss out on the prizes. Trust us.

***Bingo cards MUST be dropped off at MINT before 5 pm on THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2011.*** Also, they should have a label (post it note or something of that nature) on the back with your name, phone number, and email address.

"Coeducation" opens Saturday, February 12

"Coeducation", a joint exhibit from couple Chelsea Raflo and Chris Hamersly, loosely explores the dynamics of living and learning in close contact. The artists describe the process of creating the work for this exhibit as "a study in cooperation and collaboration as well as the simplicity of coexistence. Through working together, we found ourselves learning from each other, either through direct communication or just by way of... proximity and observation."

Raflo, an Atlanta native, graduated from Kenyon College in 2008 with a B.A. in studio art and currently works at Riot Atlanta, a creative post-production studio. She utilizes a variety of mediums in her work but for this exhibit, focuses on drawing and painting. Her work reflects an interest in the junction of the verbal and visual worlds. She has most recently exhibited in the MOCA GA "Movers and Shakers" group show and in a solo exhibit at Carroll Street Cafe. Her animation work has been featured on the IFC Sundance Network. Hamersly studied photography at Georgia State University and currently works as a screen printer at Danger Press. He works primarily in pen and ink. Past exhibitions include a solo exhibit at San Francisco Coffee Roasters and group shows at 11:11 Teahouse, MINT and MJQ.

AstroPop on Saturday, January 8th

Jon Adelung, born in El Paso Texas in 1979, is inspired by the wonders of the never-ending universe of cartoons, science fiction and movies. Much of his inspiration comes from old cartoon pop artists Peter Max and Heinz Edelman. He is also influenced by artists such as Bob Ross, Andy Warhol, and Jean- Michele Basquiat. AstroPop is the culmination of years of constant painting, drawing and creating a world that is vast and full of life.

Jon's work has been exhibited at the Bridge Center of Contemporary Art, Lola Art Gallery,The Hive Gallery and more. His work was also featured in Zombieland, a film shot in and around Atlanta.

This Friday we're hosting the FORM 2010 Release Party for WE Design. It's free and open to the public and will include a gallery featuring the work of FORM: 2010 artists, a cover design competition and a used book sale to benefit WE Design Atlanta and MINT. Softcover copies of FORM: 2010 will also be available for sale.

After that, we'll be taking some time off to recuperate and enjoy the holidays. We'll see you again in January!

We're gearing up for the big move to the new space in December so we've planned a last few events to bid a proper farewell to the current space.

First, is our yART Sale on November 20th and 21st to get rid of all the art and random items we've accumulated over the years. On Saturday, November 6th, MINT is proud to present "BOOLESH1IT" from Nikita Gale.

The show is an exploration of the evolution of the relationship between humanity and technology. The work presented in this exhibition seeks to explore the inherently fleeting nature of being human and how human beings cope both physically and psychologically with the rapidly expanding influence and permanence of digital technology wit...hin modern human civilization. Itʼs an exploration of how the human mind negotiates the massive proliferation of information in a visually-driven, post-literate age.

The name for the show “BOOLESH1T” was inspired by George Boole, creator of Boolean arithmetic. Boolean arithmetic is a mathematical system which precipitated the development of Boolean logic, a system used in electronics that spawned the creation of virtually every digital device and website on the Internet. The Internet has gone from being a source of information and social interaction to becoming a source of, well, a lot of superfluous... “SH1T”. BOOLESH1T is ultimately a visual investigation that seeks to answer questions like “How can we as human beings continue to lead meaningful, fulfilling existences in a world that is inevitably hurtling toward complete digital automation?”

“How has this overflow of information provided by the Internet affected the ways that we think and interact with others?”
”Are we becoming less compassionate?”
”Are we growing less aware of our physical selves and our surroundings?”

The gallery space will be transformed into an interactive physical and visual manifestation of the artistʼs interpretation of the Internet. The show will feature traditional photographic prints as well as photo-based installations and mixed media works.

We are pleased to announce the upcoming relocation of the gallery and art center from 684 John Wesley Dobbs Ave, Unit B to 145B Sampson Street, Atlanta, GA 30312.

“The new space is a bit more manageable and a step in the direction of a traditional gallery. It also offers more outdoor flexibility and is even more accessible to the Beltline,” says Gallery Manager Mike Germon. The relocation will allow for a more secluded event space and a more diverse spectrum of programming while remaining in the same, creative Old 4th Ward neighborhood.

The final exhibit in the current space will be “BOOLESH1T” from Nikita Gale, opening on November 6th. There is a closing party for the exhibit and the space scheduled for November 27th. It will feature refreshments and music from local bands; the lineup and other information will be announced at a later date. The first exhibit in the new space will be MINT’s 5th Annual Postcard Pinup Show on December 3rd, a non-curated exhibit open to all creatives.

The Chronicles of Follicles - Chapter 2

MINT is proud to host a photography series by Travis and Nate Dorn, that chronicles the stories of a few select men, with beards, doing "man-things" like digging a hole, cutting hair, taming fire, or eating steak in the bathtub. The photos are dramatically shot, fun and maybe even a little disturbing. The subjects are men with notable beards. Some are in well-know bands, others are great filmmakers, editors, outlaws, or famous artists.

Accolades for "The Chronicles of Follicles"(aka the Man-Beard photo project):

The overall series received an Honorable Mention in the 2009 International Photography Awards (out of 18,000 submissions worldwide).

"The Cult Leader" photo received a top Nominee title in the 4th Annual Photography Masters Cup Color Awards (another international competition).

Our end-of-summer throwdown, WHAM: Wet Hot American Mixer is happening at The Goat Farm starting at 5 p.m. and lasting all night long! In partnership with WE Design Atlanta, we're bringing you the best way to say farewell to summer.

WHAM will feature a summer-themed art gallery curated by yours truly and live performances from Tracer Metula, Eclectic Roots Ensemble, Pyramidal Prisms, The King Congregation and DJs Tom and Rusty from Noni’s “Common Sense/Nonsense” Saturday night dance parties.

We will have plenty of yummy treats courtesy of The Good Food Truck, the Sugar Dolls and our very own corn on the cob bar. Feel free to knock down a cold one thanks to Asahi! If that weren’t enough, we’ve got a pool tournament, beer pong competition, water balloon dodgeball, 80’s costume contest and much more, with awesome prizes for the winners!

Hey y'all,

We're open today from 3 to 6 if you'd like to drop off artwork for the Wet Hot American Mixer party happening next Saturday at the Goat Farm. If you can't make it today, do not fear! We'll also be open on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8pm.

If you purchased anything from our last couple of events (Nevermind the Lines, Dreamer Boy Dan, our fundraiser at WonderRoot) you can grab that stuff today as well.

We've been having lots of meetings with different art folks (and Terry Gilliam) and we've got some exciting plans for the coming year. If you've got an exhibit in mind that you'd like to have at the gallery, send Mike (the gallery manager) an email at mike@mintatl.org.

MINT and WE Design are looking for artwork in any medium/size for our joint end of the Summer party called WHAM or Wet Hot American Mixer. This party is inspired by the cult film Wet Hot American Summer and will be hosted at the Goat Farm on September 25th. The artwork must be an interpretation of "What I Did On My Summer Vacation..." Think big juicy hotdogs, wet t-shirts, sweaty concerts, exotic travels, camping, cleaning tar balls of the Gulf, sitting at home watching Netflix Instant Queue, or working your ass off, the possibilities are limitless!

MINT/WE Design will be receiving 50% of art sales. Please label the back of your artwork with your name, contact info (phone number and e-mail), and price.

All artwork should be dropped-off at MINT on Sunday, September 19th between 3 and 6pm or on Wednesday, September 22nd between 6 and 8pm. If neither of those times work, please call (404) 946-8982 to set up a time for your drop off.

Dreamer Boy Dan tonight!

Dreamer Boy Dan is the collaborative work of poets, painters, and musicians from Atlanta, Savannah, and Brooklyn building a collective lucid dream.

An exhibition of paintings and a live performance by the ten member band opens August 27th.

In the spirit Grimm's Fairy Tales, insomnia, and the collective unconscious Dreamer Boy Dan is a gothic fairy tale swirling through a parade of original chimera and contemporary nightmares.

Creators Nic*Rad and Brock Scott began working together while Rad attended the Savannah College of Art and Design, and Scott studied at SCAD Atlanta-- the duo enlisted ten eerily talented musicians to help complete the vision.

The show will be up through September 19. The team hopes to continue with the Dreamer Boy Dan series of nightmares until someone wakes them up, semi violently.

Continuing the dialogue amongst emerging creative organizations in the metro Atlanta area, GATHER ATLANTA is back for the Second Annual Creatives Conference to be held Saturday July 31st, at Trees Atlanta from 6:30-10pm. Presented by BURNAWAY, MINT, ThoughtMarker and WonderRoot, GATHER ATLANTA 2010 is a conference promoting and facilitating collaboration between Atlanta’s independent and emerging galleries, creative collectives and non-profits.

Attendees will have the opportunity to network, learn about a cross section of visual and performing arts groups, discover new cultural offerings and learn how they can support their local artists as well as metro Atlanta creative industries through volunteerism and active participation. In addition to these opportunities, there will also be a panel discussion, curated by Jeremy Abernathy of BURNAWAY focusing on the topic of “Art and the Public Sphere”.

So very excited that we can participate in this year's Artlantis Festival (organized by some of our favorites over at Beep Beep Gallery). Last year the event coincided with Gather Atlanta (which is on July 31st this year - mark your calendars!) so we weren't able to be as involved as we would have liked.

This year's event features affordable art by local emerging artists, music by some of Atlanta's most compelling musical acts, a full craft market, and some fellow arts organizations!

Bands include Carnivores, Thy Mighty Contract, Abby Go Go, El Fossil, Mermaids, Lindsay Appel, Buffalo Bangers, Mule Skinner MacQueen, and the Black and White District.

"Just a few short months after our initial exhibition, The New Alchemy, the collective is busily preparing for our second collaborative show: Solid Gold. The goal of our first exhibition was to show how the work of individual artists could coexist within a side-by-side grouping of multifunctional interdisciplinary works. Our upcoming show is focused on the idea that the same group of individuals can shift that energy to collaborate on a singular interdisciplinary installation.

The formation of our group was a direct reaction to a rough economic climate – we worked together to support one another amidst shrinking art budgets, loss of employment, rising supply costs, and a local art community that was shuttering gallery doors and cutting creative jobs left and right. We were forced to bring our artistic practices down to the very essence of what we wanted to share with others, which brought up a discussion littered with ideas of worth and value, failed systems of commerce and patronage, and everyday people starving for some kind of positive mental stimulation to inspire them through hard times.

The installation itself is an explosion of paper, sound, performance and new media. The opening and closing receptions are essentially giant “happenings,” with the participating artists on hand for performances, the creation of on-the-spot original commissioned works and plenty of patron-to-artist dialogue. We are providing art, but also an intriguing, all-encompassing experience.

We are inviting Atlanta’s community to check their financial stresses at the door, and to take some time to participate in the idea of pure experience, human connection and free exchange. Viewers are invited to interact with the installation, selecting pieces from it to take home with them, and ultimately shaping the installation itself. The artists have chosen to encourage new forms of patronage by rejecting the idea of pricing artwork, and opening up to consider any and all forms of payment and barter that participants bring to the table. Make us an offer. We want you to engage with us, and take home your own piece of Solid Gold. "
